Abstract

The article examines the historical stages of the formation of the Ukrainian nation as a complex and multidimensional process covering the early medieval (Kyivan Rus’), Cossack-Hetman, and modern periods. The key factors of nation-building are analyzed, including culture, language, religion, political institutions, and historical memory. Special attention is paid to the influence of socio-political transformations, external factors, and European ideas on the development of Ukrainian national identity. It is demonstrated that the Ukrainian nation emerged as a result of a long historical evolution, transitioning from an ethno-cultural community to a modern political nation. Each historical stage is characterized by its own specific features while ensuring continuity in national development. The study emphasizes the importance of historical memory and cultural heritage in strengthening national unity under contemporary challenges.
