Abstract

This study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the role of the Lithuanian-Polish period as a key stage in the genesis of the Ukrainian nation. The work examines the historical preconditions for the integration of Ukrainian lands into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and analyses the impact of political transformations on the ethnic consolidation of society. Particular attention is paid to the legal aspects of nation-building. The author examines the Statutes of Lithuania as the foundation of legal regulation and the role of Magdeburg law in the development of urban self-government. The consequences of the Unions of Lublin (1569) and Brest (1596) are highlighted, which brought about profound changes in the socio-legal structure and religious life, and led to processes of Polonisation. The study employs historicallegal and comparative methods, which have made it possible to determine the legal status of various social classes (nobility, townspeople, peasants) and its influence on the formation of national identity. The findings of this study emphasise that it was during this period that the foundations of Ukrainian legal culture were laid and the institutional prerequisites for future statehood were formed. It is argued that the legal transformations of the Lithuanian-Polish period became a factor in socio-cultural differentiation and a catalyst for the national self-determination of Ukrainians.
